Lightbulb 2010 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra achieve best-in-class fuel-economy

General Motors Company says that powertrain enhancements to the 2010 Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra have helped the two pickups achieve best-in-class fuel-economy based on EPA estimates.
Both models with a 5.3L V8 now achieve an EPA-estimated fuel-economy of 15/21 mpg (city/highway), as compared to 14/20 mpg from their previous models. The Extra Fuel Economy (XFE) models now get 15/22 mpg. The hybrid versions of both pickups now have an EPA-estimated fuel-economy of 21/22 mpg – putting them at the top in terms of fuel-economy.
GM said that the fuel-economy increases come from its new fuel-saver model, which is enabled by its Active Fuel Management system, that allows the pickups to run on 4-cylinders during light throttle. Also helping increase fuel-economy is a more efficient 6-speed transmission, engine variable valve timing and a lower gear ratio of 3.08.

Ford – 5.4L: 14 city / 20 hwy; 4.6L with 6-speed transmission: 15 city / 21 hwy
Dodge – 5.7L: 14 city / 20 hwy
Toyota – 5.7L: 14 city / 18 hwy; 4.6L: 15 city / 20 hwy
Nissan – 5.6L: 13 city / 17 hwy; 5.6L (E85): 13 city / 18 hwy
