Lightbulb 2010 Gmc Sierra Hybrid

The GMC Sierra 1500 Hybrid offers what is for many the best of both worlds: hybrid fuel efficiency and the Sierra 1500 work truck reputation. The Sierra Hybrid is built around GM's Electrically Variable Transmission (EVT) and 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS), which are teamed to a regular GMC 6.0-liter V8. This powertrain is identical to the one found in the Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid. The hybrid drivetrain offers a 40 percent improvement in city fuel economy and 25 percent improvement in overall fuel efficiency compared to the standard Sierra 1500. Despite its hybrid roots, the new Sierra model manages to retain a 6,100-pound (2,767 kg) towing capacity. Window stickers will show an EPA mileage estimate of 21 mpg for city driving and 22 mpg freeway.
When the truck is not hauling a heavy load, it can operate in an electric-only mode at up to 30 mph. Like GM's other V8 offerings, the motor features cylinder deactivation which allows it to operate in a four-cylinder mode for improved efficiency when traveling at a steady speed. With GM's two-mode hybrid system, the electric power used to propel the vehicle is generated by the hybrid system itself. When the brakes are applied or the vehicle is coasting, the electric motors within the hybrid system create electricity that is stored in the 300-volt battery. This stored energy is used to propel the vehicle and the regenerative braking cycle is renewed.

The Sierra Hybrid is offered in GMC's Crew Cab body style with both 2WD and 4WD models. Each model is equipped with StabiliTrak electronic stability control system, a locking rear axle, and a trailering package. The truck also comes standard with dual-stage frontal air bags and head curtain side air bags for safety.

The Sierra Hybrid includes a few notable features that GMC included to ensure a quiet and comfortable ride. GMC started the sound dampening improvements with a redesign of the exhaust system and resonator and then added low-rolling resistance tires and a low-vibration power steering system. To round out the noise-dampening upgrades GMC installed a quieter fan for the Energy Storage System. The smooth ride is delivered via its Z85 suspension and a newly designed hydraulic body mount. Located on the passenger side of the chassis, the hydraulic mount provides improved highway driving smoothness, particularly on rough or choppy road surfaces.

With the fuel savings of the hybrid system and Sierra's 26-gallon (98-liter) fuel tank, the Sierra Hybrid has a cruising range of more than 500 miles (800 km). The Sierra's starting MSRP is $38,390 for a 2WD model while the 4WD variant starts at $41,540, both prices shown are before the $975 destination fee. The only notable options are a driver's side power seat for $275 and a power sunroof for $995.

Vehicle Highlights

The 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 Hybrid gains the ability to run on E85 ethanol-blended fuel. This large pickup truck comes as a 4-door crew cab with seating for up to 6. Rear-wheel drive is standard. Available is GM's full-time Autotrac 4-wheel drive that can be left engaged on dry pavement and includes a low-range gear for off-roading. The Hybrid has a 6.0-liter V8 engine that comes with GM's Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation and pairs with an electric motor for 332 hp total. It can run on one or both of its power sources, depending on driving demands, and requires no plug-in charging. The sole transmission is a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Maximum towing capacity is 6100 lb. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, and curtain side airbags. Available features include a navigation system, remote engine start, and a wireless cell-phone link.
