Plus Size Tires Fitment Guide

Plus-sizing tires is the easiest way to improve the performance and looks of a car's wheels, so long as several simple principles are kept in mind. Also, plus sizing requires an understanding of the basic measurements of tires--since there is such a thing as going too far.

Tire Basics

Understand the way tire sizes are described on the sidewall; for example, a tire may be listed as P205/60R15. The P stands for passenger, 205 is the width of the tire in mm, 60 is the aspect ratio (i.e. the sidewall is 60 percent of total width), R refers to radial construction and 15 is the most important: it's the rim size in inches.

Plus sizing means increasing the size of the rim--this is the critical number. However, tire width needs to increase accordingly, while the aspect ratio is reduced for a more sporty look.
Sizing Grades

Note the original equipment tires and decide how far you want to take the plus sizing. If using the example above, plus zero would be something like P235/50R15. The width increased, the aspect ratio lowered, but rim diameter stayed the same; hence, "zero." Plus one would be a 16-inch rim, regardless of the other figures, while plus two equals a 17-inch rim.

To get good results, aspect ratio and tire width need to change as rim size changes. A good plus two for our example would be P245/40R17.
Considerations

Make sure you know how plus sizing affects cars--wider tires increase grip and speed, but reduce fuel economy. Likewise, lower aspect ratios and bigger rims may look cool, but they adversely affect ride quality. Expect a much harsher road feel.

There's a reason plus sizing typically only goes up to plus two: wheel wells can only accommodate so much increase in overall wheel diameter. Going too far brings tires too close to the frame and doesn't allow wheels the freedom they need to turn and move.
