According to The Canadian Press, light heavyweight champion Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida will take on Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in a rematch of the main event of UFC 104.

Machida (16-0) escaped their first meeting with a victory, but the result was questioned by many, including the majority of the crowd in attendance, who booed the judge's unanimous decision in favour of the 31-year old champion. Many UFC fighters sitting ringside also voiced their belief that Shogun (18-4) had done enough to earn the decision and the light heavyweight title.

Due to the controversial ending and the evenly-matched nature of the bout, both fighters have agreed to enter the octagon against each other once again.

UFC President Dana White was also among those unhappy with the result of their first fight.

"I think Lyoto Machida is a freak of nature," White told the Canadian Press immediately after the UFC 104 main event. "What makes him so great is he can do things other people can't do . . . I've been saying this was a fight between two of the best technical strikers in the business and he couldn't pull that off against Shogun.

"I'm pretty confident the rematch will be a different fight for both guys. Nobody wants to be sitting here, banged up, beat up, bruised up -- lose and win a fight the way they did. It doesn't feel good for anybody."

Montreal has already played host to UFC 83 and UFC 97, in April 2008 and April 2009, respectively.:)

Shaquille O’Neal’s wife filed for legal separation November 9, and plans to file for divorce.

Basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal is sadly having troubles off the court of the romantic persuasion. The Associated Press confirmed that Va'Shaundya O'Neal is filing for legal separation and plans to file for divorce Monday.

“Shaunie” is also planning to seek full custody of all of the four children they have together which range from ages 3 to 9, as well as to collect child support.

Even though Shaq’s wife cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the separation, CDInsight hinted that the split was money driven, as Va’Shaundya made constant allegations against her husband, claiming he hid money from her. He actually tried to divorce her because of this very complication two years ago.

The last brush with divorce was filed in the city of Miami, where as this year, Va’Shaundya O’Neal will be filing for divorce in Los Angeles, where there is reported more lucrative community property divorce law.

The not-so-happy couple were married for seven years.

CORAOPOLIS, Pa. (UPI) -- Assault charges against U.S. professional wrestler Kurt Angle were dropped during a Pennsylvania court hearing Tuesday, attorneys said.

District Judge Mary Murray of Coraopolis dismissed the charges against Angle, who has been accused of attacking ex-girlfriend Trenesha Biggers, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

"I've had a hard year," Angle told reporters outside the courtroom in suburban Pittsburgh. "I've had a lot of false accusations and this was the hardest. I've never hit a woman, never would."

Biggers claimed Angle slammed her head into a wall during an argument in their Moon, Pa., home.

"She says this violent altercation occurred and as you know my client is a professional wrestler, he's a big guy," Angle's attorney Michele Santicola told KDKA-TV, Pittsburgh. "If this terribly violent incident had occurred, there would be some injuries here."

"We are going to push to re-file this again with the (district attorney), Biggers told reporters. "We will be able to submit the confessions and voice mails and all the other evidence that we have."

Illness looks like it could prevent Brock Lesnar from ever fighting again.

On Monday, UFC President Dana White said that the Heavyweight Champion is suffering from a bacterial infection in his intestinal tract, which depending of the severity of it could end the career of the 32-year old.

White, who didn't want to say which hospital Lesnar was in, did say he expected Lesnar to be released soon, but is encouraging the fighter to go to Mayo Clinic for further treatment.

Lesnar originally was supposed to fight Shane Carwin on November 21 for the title, but that fight was cancelled at the time because Lesnar had mono. The UFC were planning on staging the fight at UFC 108 in January, but with Lesnar's illness the fight has obviously been cancelled.

White told the Associated Press that Lesnar wanted to thank his fans for support. White also said that it was hard to tell how Lesnar was feeling.

"He's never in good spirits and he's not in good spirits now," White said.

GSP wants to wrestle in the Olympics? It's not that easy

By Maggie Hendricks

Georges St. Pierre said he's going to try to wrestle for Canada in 2012. Competing for your country in the Olympics is an amazing feat, and a worthy goal for a competitor like St. Pierre. There is one problem, though. Canada is already pretty well stocked with wrestlers at 74 kg (163 lbs.), the weight GSP would likely compete at.

Matt Gentry, an NCAA champion for Stanford University, represented Canada at the 2008 Olympics at 74 kg. Now an assistant coach at Stanford, Gentry plans to try for the Olympics again in 2012. He points out that having GSP in the mix could strengthen Canada's delegation, but it isn't easy to get there.

"Evan McDonald is the number one guy in Canada at that weight. If St. Pierre comes in, there's going to be a lot of depth at that weight," Gentry told Cagewriter. "That kind of depth is only going to make our country better. It will make the representative who ends up competing more tested, and they'll have to work harder to earn that spot, which will pay off in the long run."

McDonald wrestled for Canada in the world championships this past September. If GSP were to try to wrestle in the Olympics, he would need to get through both Gentry and McDonald. With such little freestyle wrestling experience, it could be difficult.

"He does have good takedowns, he does have good blast doubles, but it's hard to make the comparison," Gentry said. "But [MMA fighters] stand upright. I've seen those blast doubles, and he's certainly a horse in terms of conditioning, but it is pretty different. It's such a technical sport."

Yes, St. Pierre is very adept at using wrestling during fights. However, there is a huge difference between taking down a striker like Thiago Alves at will and trying to do the same against Buvaisar Saitiev, the Russian gold medalist at GSP's weight class and one of the most dominant wrestlers of the past decade.

Just qualifying your country's weight class for the Olympics is a difficult feat. It requires the wrestler to take a top eight placing at the 2011 World Championships, win their continental championship -- for GSP, it would be the Pan-American Championships -- or win one of the two qualifying tournaments. How hard is that? Only one country, Russia, qualified wrestlers in every weight class for Beijing. Out of eighteen weight classes, Canada qualified ten of them in 2008.

Making Canada's team is also a time-intensive feat. GSP would need to start with the Canadian national championships in 2011 to become part of the ladder of competitors for the Olympic Trials. After that, GSP would need to win the Canadian Olympic Trials, usually held in December of the year before the Olympics. This would tie up GSP for more than a year.

Still, Gentry isn't going to look past St. Pierre if he does try for the Olympics.

"He's a competitor, I'm sure that he'll be tough to beat, no matter what he's competing in."

NEW YORK (UPI) -- Calgary right wing Jarome Iginla had two game-winning goals last week and was selected the NHL's No. 1 star of the week.

Honored along with Iginla by the league for games played Nov. 2-8 were San Jose goaltender Evgeni Nabokov and Philadelphia defenseman Chris Pronger.

Iginla had four goals over three games last week, including game-winners against Dallas and the New York Rangers. He had a pair of goals in the Dallas game, where his second goal won the game in overtime. Iginla had the first goal of a 2-1 win at St. Louis and broke a tie that led to a win over the Rangers.

Nabokov, who was named NHL's No. 3 star last Monday, was 2-0-1 in taking No. 2 honors this week. One of the games was a 5-0 win over Pittsburgh that marked Nabokov's first shutout of the season.

Pronger had one goal and four assists over three games. He owns a four-game point scoring streak.

UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar is seriously ill in hospital after collapsing in Canada, UFC president Dana White said Saturday.

"He's in rough shape, he's in really bad shape," White said Saturday after UFC 105.

"He is not well and he is not getting any better. . . . He's very, very sick and he's going to be out for a while. He's got a lot of problems."

Citing mononucleosis, the 32-year-old Lesnar was forced to postpone a title fight against Shane Carwin scheduled for UFC 106 on Nov. 21 in Las Vegas. The fight was pushed back to UFC 108 on Jan. 2, but that too has been postponed.

"He's got mono and he's got something else wrong with him. I know what's wrong with him, he just doesn't want me talking about it," White said.

"He doesn't have cancer or AIDS or anything like this, (but) he's got some problems, man."

White said Lesnar was currently in a hospital in North Dakota. The six-foot-three, 265-pounder owns property in Canada, White added.

"He dropped up there and had to go to hospital," White said.

He said Lesnar may have to go to the Mayo Clinic or another top hospital "to figure out what's wrong with this guy."

"He's not going to be getting well any time soon," White said.

The UFC has other concerns with fighters. White said the newly announced UFC 108 main event between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Cain Velasquez is off because Nogueira has a serious staph infection.

"(It's) bad, to the point now that it's in his bloodstream," White said. "He's probably going to have to be hospitalized and intravenously given antibiotics."

Carwin is also out after undergoing knee surgery.

"It's crazy," White said of the injuries and illness.

updated 9:33 a.m. ET, Thurs., Nov . 12, 2009

Spokeswoman says ex-boxer acted in self-defense against photographer
LOS ANGELES - Police are investigating conflicting accounts of an airport scuffle between Mike Tyson and photographer that resulted in both men being booked and released on suspicion of misdemeanor battery.

The former heavyweight boxing champion and photographer Tony Echevarria, 50, want to press charges of misdemeanor battery against each other, police said.

The photographer told police that Tyson struck him once, airport police spokesman Sgt. Jim Holcomb said. The photographer fell to the ground and was treated for a cut to his forehead at a hospital.
Tyson's spokeswoman Tammy Brook said the boxer was traveling with his wife and 10-month-old child when he was attacked by an overly aggressive paparazzo. "Mike acted in self defense as a father protecting his child," she said.

"There's a lot of different versions to this story and that's all going to come out later," Holcomb said. "Some witness statements support Tyson's version, others support the photographer's."

Police also were checking if there was any surveillance video of the incident.

Tyson was cooperative as he waited in a holding cell at the airport police station, Holcomb said. Echevarria was booked and released after he was treated at a hospital, police said.

Holcomb said both men were released without any restrictions and free to go wherever they want. It wasn't immediately clear if Tyson had continued his trip.

Paparazzi often camp out at Los Angeles' largest airport to get shots of celebrities in transit.

"I've heard people were following him into the men's room and trying to take his picture there," said Tyson's defense attorney, David Chesnoff. "My advice to him is going to be to vigorously press charges against what everyone agrees are ridiculously aggressive photographers

NEW YORK, Nov. 10, 2009

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's "Message of Hope"

Battling Rare Form of Leukemia, Basketball Legend Says He Intends to "Continue Living"
.
(CBS) When you've spent your life as one of the best basketball players who ever lived - winning championships in high school, in college and in the pros, scoring more points than anyone else and immortalized in sports history and on film - you don't expect to come suddenly face-to-face with your mortality.

"I started having hot flashes and sweats," Kareem Abdul-Jabbar told CBS News correspondent Jeff Greenfield. "And I wasn't a candidate for menopause, you know? So, trying to figure out what that was all about."

In the middle of a busy life - best-selling author, special coach for the L.A. Lakers, parent - Abdul-Jabbar learned last December that he had a rare form of Cancer.

"What I have is P.H. positive chronic myeloid leukemia, which is an aberration in your white blood cells," Abdul-Jabbar said.

Abdul-Jabbar lost a grandfather to colon cancer and almost lost his father to the same illness. But for Abdul-Jabbar, the news was a lot less grim.

"Ten years ago, this was a very serious, life-threatening diagnosis," said Dr. Michael Schuster of New York Presbyterian Hospital. "The only treatment was a bone marrow transplant. Patients now take a pill a day and can eliminate every molecular trace of the disease."

That hopeful diagnosis is why Abdul-Jabbar is now using his high visibility to go public about his illness.

"Sending this message out there, it's a message of hope. That's what it's intended to be," Abdul-Jabbar said. "It's not intended to be just a grim announcement. I want people to understand that I intend to continue living and doing all the things that I love to do up until the end. And the end is by no means rushing up on me."

LINCOLN, Neb. (UPI) -- The mother of New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain faces up to 20 years in prison after pleading no contest in Nebraska to selling methamphetamine.

Jackie Standley, 44, entered her plea to a charge of delivery of a controlled substance Monday in Lancaster County, the Lincoln Journal Star reported. The plea, which spared her a potential 50-year maximum sentence, has the same effect as a guilty plea.

Judge Karen Flowers scheduled sentencing Dec. 16. She said she expects to get a report from CenterPointe, a treatment center for people who suffer from both mental illness and drug abuse.

Standley was arrested in May. Police said she sold methamphetamine to an undercover investigator at her apartment in South Lincoln in February.

Chamberlain, being used as a reliever in the post-season, is 1-0 in the World Series. He was credited with the Yankees' 7-4 victory over the Phillies in Game 4.

TORONTO -- Alex Anthopoulos is putting the final touches on a long-term plan for the Toronto Blue Jays and expects to share some of the details before next week's general managers meetings in Chicago.

The rookie GM spent most of his first month on the job putting the struggling and aimless franchise's house in order by restructuring the scouting and player development departments, and later sorting through the coaching staff's dysfunction.

Next on the agenda is installing a philosophy and a direction to guide the Blue Jays through this off-season as Anthopoulos and his staff try to build a winner from the rubble of a 75-87 season.

He'll sit down in the coming days with team president and CEO Paul Beeston and the team's ownership to hammer out the guidelines before giving the public the gist of things, likely this weekend.

"I'm getting really close," Anthopoulos said in an interview Monday. "By the time I go to the GMs meetings (Nov. 9-11) I'm going to know exactly what direction I'm going in, and where the organization is headed, and what he have to work with, and so on."

The over-riding question is whether to add to a payroll that was about US$80 million last year, or scale back to rebuild the core for a competitive window down the line.

The answer there will decide the fate of ace Roy Halladay, who is eligible for free agency after the 2010 season and won't want to stick around for any kind of rebuild. Dealing him would help kickstart the process by fetching a group of young players to boost the farm system.

"If this team wins, then there's a good opportunity for him to stay here. The reality of it is we were a 75-win team last year and obviously that doesn't meet Roy's criteria for winning right now," said Anthopoulos. "Roy's goals are the same as ours but his timeline might not be the same as ours and what I'm working through right now is how soon, in this off-season, can we turn this entire thing around, that we can be a team that really makes a run at the playoffs."

Given that they finished 28 games back of the American League East champion New York Yankees, and 20 games behind the wild-card winning Boston Red Sox, the team's first post-season berth since 1993 doesn't seem imminent.

Consider too that there are several holes on the pitching staff and in the batting order, and some sort of rebuild appears to be in order.

"Every year you're trying to win, but that being said, what's the probability of winning?" said Anthopoulos. "I think that's the biggest thing. Every year there are teams that surprise and depending on the type of team you have, every one can look at it and say it can be a playoff team but these things need to occur. You evaluate what's the likelihood of certain things occurring."

Also up in the air is the status of shortstops Marco Scutaro and John McDonald, plus catcher Rod Barajas. Anthopoulos confirmed that while the team's fourth free agent, utilityman Kevin Millar, won't be back, he does have some interest in retaining the other three.

Should they not return, the need to fill two key positions would be added to his winter to-do list.

"As much as I like John McDonald, Rod Barajas and Marco Scutaro, there might be alternatives that make this organization better and are the right alternatives for this team," said Anthopoulos.

"We'd like to bring them back, (but) everything has to fit with respect to what the alternatives are and with respect to what their financial requirements are. I'm starting to get a pretty good handle on where their expectations are with respect to the market and what they feel their value might be."

American football player

Walter Payton, nicknamed "Sweetness" in college for his sweet and graceful moves on the football field, never lost that sweetness, even after he left the game. Never were Payton's qualities of grace and dignity more evident than in his final days, as he struggled unsuccessfully against a rare liver disease that progressed to the cancer of the bile duct that eventually took his life. Only 45 when he died in November 1999, Payton was, until the fall of 2002, the leading National Football League (NFL) rusher of all time, with a career total of 16,726 yards. Payton spent the final weekend of his life with former teammate Mike Singletary, who later told the Washington Times, "With all the greatest runs, the greatest moves I saw from him, what I experienced this weekend was by far the best of Walter Payton I've ever seen. As a person, he was a bright spot for any darkness that appeared." Payton's intensity and ferocity on the football field were balanced by a generosity of spirit and magnanimity off the field that were no less impressive. In his tribute to Payton, NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue probably summed it up best: "Walter exemplified class, and all of us in sports should honor him by striving to perpetuate his standard of excellence. Walter was an inspiration in everything he did. The tremendous grace and dignity he displayed in his final months reminded us again why 'Sweetness' was the perfect nickname for Walter Payton."

I have watched football for 40yr I have seen them all and if I was to pick a team this man would be my Running Back.

World wrestling phenom and reality TV dad Hulk Hogan has announced his plans to return to the world of professional wrestling.

Hogan, who retired years ago from the profession, is set to join TNA Wrestling, the group responsible for the Spike TV series TNA Impact.

Hogan was once a member of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and World Championship Wrestling (WCW), which eventually became World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).

Hogan seems enthusiastic about the move, saying he's "thrilled to be jumping back into the world of professional wrestling." Since his retirement, Hogan has been hounded by fans to return to the sport, however, "the timing or the opportunity has never been right until now."

Following his wrestling career, Hogan and his family became household names thanks in part to their hit VH1 reality show Hogan Knows Best. The show was short-lived due to the bitter and public divorce of Hogan and his wife, Linda.

Both Hogan and TNA have not yet announced his role with the organization.:)

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- Jamie McCourt is seeking to void an agreement that may block her from claiming a piece of the Los Angeles Dodgers in her divorce, court documents indicated.

Jamie McCourt, who formally filed for divorce from Dodgers owner Frank McCourt Tuesday, contended the agreement they signed in 2004 naming Frank McCourt sole owner of the Dodgers was invalid and unenforceable.

Frank McCourt responded with documents he contends trump California's community property laws, which would give his estranged with a 50 percent stake in the team.

The Los Angeles Times said the paperwork was the opening salvo in a legal fight over control of the franchise, which the couple purchased from Fox for $431 million. The agreement granted Mrs. McCourt sole ownership of various personal properties, including eight residences.

Mrs. McCourt is also seeking monthly spousal support of $320,000 and reinstatement as the team's chief executive officer, the report said.

The couple announced Oct. 15 they were separating after almost 30 years of marriage.

SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -- San Francisco 49ers Coach Mike Singletary said Monday Alex Smith will start at quarterback, replacing Shaun Hill.

San Francisco plays at Indianapolis Sunday.

"We wanted to make the decision based on who I feel gives us the best chance to win," Singletary said.

In the 49ers last game, Sunday against Houston, Hill started but was replaced by Smith in the second half. Smith threw three touchdown passes, bringing the 49ers back from a 21-point deficit before they lost 24-21.

Hill led the team to three wins but lost his job after back-to-back losses, with a passer rating of 79.6.

"He's done a great job at this point, but right now, we need to go with Alex," Singletary said " Alex Smith gives us the best chance to win.":)
