Battery is no good..normal..have 2 here with that problem...But o/s and a software for that type of laptop controls the some of the charging. Turn laptop off...Leave it pluged into the power supply...It will charge..normal a yellow light indicates charging and green is charged. Pull bat out and check with volt meter. Should be 14 volts or near...Leave it over nite..check again..if less than 12 volt...Its no good...Have one I get 2 minutes another half hour...We leave them in while using them on power suply...which kills the bat.

check the charger also before you just dump the battery and I would just do a full format and a fresh install on the o/s

I would try and get a recovery disk from the maker of the laptop say Dell or whatever. thy should send you one for free. that should have all the drivers you need for a fresh install for a new OS

Whats the brand name of the laptop. All the software could be on the laptop.

pressing f10 during the post operation may bring up what you need. Many desktops and laptops have a restore partition on the hard drive.
I did some further reading and found pressing f12 during the post may work on your sony. Need to know the model to help.
