Buzz It looks like you and I buddy. I am 61 and a retired Computer Science PhD. And I have been using Linux from the beginning, I have tried every distro and find something interesting in all. distrowatch.com is the best place to find all of the different flavours of Linux. I also am using Unbuntu at this time but here is a suggestion for you. Find the one thing you can not do in your current distro and find a way to make it work. For years voice chat programs have been something that the Linux community has not taken seriously but in the past year or so Skype has offered us a great program for voice and video under linux. I think it also has a lot to do with the different desk top managers, I like E17 enlightenment and Gnome E17 is fast and has more eye candy than windows if you take advantage of it's ability. Give me a list of apps you would like to use and I would love to help you find and plug any holes you have. It makes me very happy to see the interest you have in the OS and would love to help in any way I can. This old dog just might be able to save you some time :) |

This is AWSOME, I'm glad you made your post, and am very much looking forward to learning from your past experience. I suppose I should give a little background. I'm 38 now and started writing simple programs in BASIC on a Commodore Vic 20 (remember those, lol) when I was 12, totally hooked at a young age. Messed around with Apple IIe in high school, the went to college to major in social work. Turns out I majored in co-eds and cheap beer, left school after 3 years. I totally got away from all thing computing until around 1997 or 1998, been tinkering ever since. I am fairly new to Linux, been playing for around a year or so, and am convinced it is the best OS out there. I'm dual booting 32 bit Ubuntu with Vista. The only other 2 distro's I've played with are Kubuntu, KDE is pretty but sucks resources, and Mint, looks to much like windows figured it would crash, lol.
That's where you found me. What do you like for converting .avi to DVD. I just loaded up DeVeDe but haven't had a chance to try it out. I like VLC for a media player, and rhythmbox seems OK for MP3's. Other than that I'm using the AWN toolbar to kinda dress things up. Point me in a direction, lol. Thanks ! Buzz |

I also looked and waited for the time I could dump Windows totally and that time came last couple of years. If you look back you will find the Linux community has always been very helpful but geeks have had a very low need for some of the basic window basic apps , such as voice chat, we now have Skype for Linux in just about any flavour of package manager out there, check skype.com. AWN is one of the best docks you can use no matter which desk top you are running. The key regardless of which distro is ,,,speed and simplistic. I love Gnome but it also can be very heavy at times, check out E17 which you can load on Unbuntu, it is light fast and full of options for customising the desk top. It will be a bit confusing at first as it is going to be very different. Hang in there and I think you will like it. If you want to use a distro based on Enlightenment try these.First Where Debian meets Enlightenment then look at this one Sabayon Linux Four Oh! and finally this one Macpup: A beautiful remaster of Puppy Linux This should keep you busy for the next few days, really give these a look and remember you can load E 16 with synaptic package manager if you just want to get a look at E Good luck and have fun.... |
