Seinfeld cast to reunite on Curb Your Enthusiasm

The cast of Seinfeld is about to reunite for a five-episode run of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Good news

Because Larry David, Curb’s iconoclastic writer, star, producer and complainer-in-chief, doesn’t need another reason to get angry.

David, seething with mock indignation, took the stage moments after a highlight reel from Curb’s seventh season was shown to reporters at the semi- annual gathering of the Television Critics Association.

The co-creator, one-time head writer and executive producer of Seinfeld has done what he once swore he would never do: Talk the cast of Seinfeld into a reunion.

That reunion will form the focus of five episodes of the new season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, which begins this fall on HBO Canada.

In the highlight reel, David, playing an exaggerated version of himself, is shown trying to tear his way through the plastic packaging for a Larry David bobblehead doll. The more he struggles, the angrier he gets, until the veins threaten to explode in his bald pate. He utters a primal scream, grabs an ice pick and begins stabbing the packaging with a vengeance, like the shower scene in Psycho - to no avail.

In another clip, David - Seinfeld’s co-creator and head writer for seven seasons - is shown hosting a table read for a Seinfeld reunion episode, featuring the show’s entire original cast. Scenes from the imaginary episode will be shown in Curb Your Enthusiasm, but not the entire episode.

In all, David wrote or co-wrote nearly 60 episodes of Seinfeld’s 180 total, including the much-maligned series finale. He swore he was done with Seinfeld, though, after the finale aired to a mixed response in May, 1998.

Then again, David was also believed to have lost his enthusiasm for Curb Your Enthusiasm. True to HBO tradition, the pay-cable channel waited for David to change his mind rather than cancel the show outright.

Curb Your Enthusiasm’s return in September will mark the first new episode in nearly two years. The Seinfeld cast will appear in half the season’s 10 episodes, starting in early October. It will have been more than 11 years since the Seinfeld cast got together.

Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Seinfeld episodes aren’t an official Seinfeld reunion, David insists, but something slightly different. A Bizarro Seinfeld reunion, if you like
