The Telus Corporation announced today that Telus branded direct-to-home (DTH) satellite television offering is now available across most of Alberta and British Columbia.
Telus says the new TV offering will complement rather than replace its current IP-based TV service which is only available to about 10% of households in the two provinces.
The launch follows a May announcement by Telus saying it would being offering the BTV DTH service under the Telus name. At the time Telus officials said the move was necessary in order for Telus to be able to offer a quadruple play of offerings - home phone, wireless phone, Internet and television services - to the more than 90 per cent of households across British Columbia and Alberta that are unable to subscribe to Telus IPTV.
By offering a complete bundle of services for home owners, Telus hopes to stem the loss of landline and internet customers who are bundling up with Shaw Cable in Western Canada. Since Shaw launched phone service in Calgary in early 2005, the cable company has acquired more than 770,000 telephone subscribers, primarily from Telus.
Telus will be offering BTV's line-up of more than 500 digital channels, including more than 70 HD channels, pay per view, an interactive programming guide, and time shifting.
The agreement is not be exclusive therefore BTV will continue selling its BTV direct-to-home satellite service under its own name in B.C and Alberta
