CHULA VISTA, Calif. (UPI) -- U.S. and Mexican officials say they have launched a manhunt for the killer of a U.S. Border Patrol agent, who was shot and killed 60 miles east of San Diego.
Officials said Robert Rosas, 30, was slain by one or more assailants after responding to a reported incursion along a steel border fence near the rural town of Campo, Calif., in eastern San Diego County, the Los Angeles Times reported. "It was a cowardly act against an agent trying to protect this country," Rick Barlow, acting chief of the agency's San Diego sector, told the newspaper as flags flew at half-staff outside of headquarters in Chula Vista, Calif. The FBI told the Times late Friday that no one had been arrested or charged in connection with the killing. A 36-year-old man caught walking near the crime scene allegedly carrying a Border Patrol-issued weapon was arrested by police in Tecate, Mexico, who said Ernesto Parra Valenzuela, 36, was injured and taken to a hospital. Unnamed sources told the Times one of the assailants may have been injured in the attack on Rosas, whose weapon and radio were stolen. Police dogs reportedly followed a blood trail to the border.

This is just a follow-up post from the first post in this thread:
SAN DIEGO (UPI) -- An autopsy conducted on a U.S. Border Patrol agent slain in California shows he was shot eight times, authorities say. The autopsy indicated Agent Robert Rosas, 30, of El Centro, Calif., was shot four times in the head; three times in torso and once in the neck, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Wednesday. The newspaper said Rosas was killed while tracking suspected illegal immigrants July 23 through a rugged and remote area near Campo, Calif., along the U.S.-Mexican border. Officials say a fellow agent heard six to eight gunshots ring out shortly after Rosas exited his vehicle. The autopsy report said shell casings and a flashlight were found nearby. The Union-Tribune said Mexican authorities are holding five people in connection with the killing, one of whom, Ernesto Parra Valenzuela, has reportedly been directly implicated in the shooting by a fellow smuggling suspect.
